Adult dogs have osteoarthritis
Pain is the most underrecognised cause of behaviour problems — and almost no dog training app talks about it.

Positive reinforcement is not kindness — it is science. The evidence is unambiguous. We use nothing else.

The problem with dog training

Most training treats the behaviour.
We treat the dog.

Your dog growls at strangers. Pulls constantly. Cannot be left alone. Barks relentlessly. The standard advice is always the same: correct the behaviour.

But behaviour is communication. A dog who has started snapping was a dog who was communicating long before the snap — through stiffening, through averting gaze, through moving away. A dog who pulls toward other dogs may be frustrated, or frightened, or in pain in their neck. The behaviour tells you what the dog is experiencing. Suppressing it helps no one.

"A significant proportion of dogs presenting with behaviour problems are experiencing undiagnosed or undertreated pain. Pain is the most underrecognised cause of behaviour problems in dogs."

— The position of veterinary behavioural medicine
The common approach
"He's being dominant. You need to show him who's boss."
What the science shows
Dominance theory has been comprehensively rejected by veterinary behavioural science. Behaviour problems have causes — fear, pain, unmet needs — that respond to understanding, not force.
The common approach
"Never comfort a scared dog — it reinforces the fear."
What the science shows
This is not supported by evidence. Comforting a frightened dog does not reinforce fear. It reduces cortisol and activates the calm-down response. Hold your dog.
The common approach
"He just needs more exercise — he's full of energy."
What the science shows
A 20-minute sniff walk is more mentally satisfying than a 45-minute run. Dogs need cognitive enrichment, agency, and sensory stimulation — not just miles covered.

What makes Whole Dog Method different

Three things no other
dog training app does.

🩺
Pain as the starting point
Every specific issue module begins with a pain screener. Before behaviour modification, we look for physical causes. A dog trained for pulling when their neck hurts is a dog being trained to tolerate pain. We do not do that.
🔬
Behavioural science, not myths
Every lesson is grounded in peer-reviewed research — Pavlov's classical conditioning, Skinner's operant conditioning, the neuroscience of fear and attachment. We explain the why behind every technique, because owners who understand the science use it better.
🌱
Your dog's entire life
Preparing before a dog arrives. Puppyhood. The teenage phase. Adult enrichment. Senior pain management. End of life. No other consumer dog training resource covers every developmental stage in depth.

The curriculum

11 complete modules.
One coherent programme.

Every module includes step-by-step lessons, video demonstrations, knowledge checks, downloadable resources, and a pain screening prompt. Nothing is surface-level. This is the most complete science-based dog training curriculum available.

The pain connection

The conversation dog training has been avoiding.

80%
of dogs over 8 years have some degree of osteoarthritis. Most are not on pain management. Most owners attribute the behavioural changes to age, not pain.
1/5
adult dogs are affected by osteoarthritis — and the early signs look exactly like behaviour problems. Stiffness. Irritability. Reluctance to exercise. Growling when touched.

Pain signals that look like behaviour problems

Sudden aggression or snapping

A dog who "suddenly" became aggressive is almost always a dog who has been in pain — pain lowers the defensive threshold dramatically.

🐕

Reluctance to jump or use stairs

Not stubbornness. A dog who stops jumping into the car is a dog who has learned that jumping hurts.

🌙

Nighttime restlessness or barking

Pain is often worse when lying still. A dog who cannot settle at night may be experiencing arthritis pain — not anxiety.

🎾

Loss of interest in play or walks

Before attributing this to personality or age, rule out pain. A dog in discomfort conserves movement — this is biology, not character.

What dog owners say

The approach that finally
made sense.

"

I had tried three different trainers for my reactive dog. Nobody had ever mentioned that pain might be involved. Whole Dog Method was the first place that connected the pieces. Turns out she had a neck issue that was making the lead unbearable. Once that was treated, her reactivity halved.

Bella — 4-year-old Border Collie
"

The teenage dog module saved my sanity. I genuinely thought something had gone wrong with my Labrador — he'd been perfect at four months and was completely ignoring me at ten. Understanding that this is neurological, not disobedience, changed how I responded to him entirely.

James T.
Monty — 11-month-old Labrador
"

I've had dogs my whole life and thought I knew what I was doing. The pain screener made me book a vet appointment I'd been putting off. My 9-year-old was on arthritis medication within a fortnight — and her resource guarding, which I'd been managing for years, reduced significantly within weeks.

Questions

When does Whole Dog Method launch?
We are building the full app now. Join the waitlist and you will be the first to know — and the first to access founding member pricing, which will be the best price it ever is.
Is this suitable for a dog with existing behaviour problems?
Yes — and arguably more so than for dogs with no challenges. The Specific Issues pathway covers reactivity, separation anxiety, leash pulling, recall, barking, resource guarding, and fear and anxiety in depth. Each module includes a pain screening step, because unaddressed pain is the most common reason behaviour modification fails.
What if I already have an adult rescue dog?
The Adult Dogs module includes a complete section on the 3-3-3 decompression period and what rescue dogs need in transition — including how to distinguish between settling-in behaviour and genuine anxiety that needs addressing. The Specific Issues modules work equally well for dogs at any life stage.
Do I need any prior knowledge of dog training?
None whatsoever. The curriculum begins from first principles — explaining the science of learning, how dogs develop, and what their behaviour actually means. Experienced owners will find depth they have not encountered before. New owners will find clarity they have been lacking.
Is the pain screener really free?
Yes, completely. The pain screener is free because we believe every dog deserves an owner who knows how to look for pain. Sign up and it will be in your inbox within minutes.
What training methods does Whole Dog Method use?
Positive reinforcement only. We do not recommend, endorse, or include any aversive, punishment-based, or dominance-theory approaches. The evidence against these methods — particularly for fear-based and anxiety-driven behaviour — is unambiguous. We follow the science.
